Review
When supporting evidence in a murder mystery uses the accused murderer's use of Social Media as motive, prepare to put in order your personal consumption of modern technology. Author John D. Mills' latest work of fiction challenges readers to examine the power of unfiltered words, messaging rants and egregious temper tantrums reduced to text messaging and Facebook postings.Titled "The Hooker, the Dancer and the Nun", this book exhibits remarkable development in author John Mills' writing career and is his sixth published book. Mills shows the trending decay of moral fiber and self-serving irresponsible actions resulting in personal devastation and murder. Characters ruled by control, revenge and manipulation of life's circumstances subsequently make bad decisions. Three women, Lacy, Susan and Patricia, meet at the University of Florida in Gainesville, during their freshman year, remaining long-time friends through college, graduate school, careers, marriages and subsequent divorces. Collegiate roommates sharing intimate thoughts, feelings and experiences become accepting of good and bad inherently residing within themselves and each other. The friendship thread carries through a decade of personal ups and downs, approval and disapproval, acceptance and denial. This friendship is the classic love-hate relationship existing on expedient survival. The overall thought; are they truly friends or victims of a twisted, toxic association? The title is based on nicknames given to each woman while in college. Lacy loves to fish and "hook" the big ones, thus the Hooker. Susan a privileged only child, lives to go clubbing and dancing for attention, the Dancer. And Patricia, committed to a morally strict Catholic upbringing, vows chastity until marriage, is named the circumspective Nun.All three women, divorced within the past year and regrouping from a tumultuous divide in their friendship, agree to mend fences during a relaxing weekend on a houseboat in the gulf waters off the coast of Fort Myers, Florida. What appears to be an ideal weekend turns into the disappearance of Patricia, the gruesome death of Susan and the arrest of Lacy for murder. With Susan's blood on her clothing, her fingerprints on the murder weapon, and no alibi except on the boat passed out from tequila and no memory of the event, Lacy is fighting against a murder conviction. The damning evidence of motive is her rants, angry texts and Facebook postings subsequent to Susan's indiscriminate actions. Mills' inclusion of historical sites and local haunts, plus his vast knowledge of boating and fishing the Gulf of Mexico environs provide impetus to visit the Fort Myers area. A Prosecuting Attorney, his long-standing Divorce Attorney girlfriend, and a Homicide Detective are returning characters from Mills' other books. Their conversations and interactions garner thoughts and considerations of healthy, sustainable relationships, work ethic, and pride and prejudice within the law. Is Lacy guilty or not is the anticipated conclusion; however it is the introduction of Social Media into the prosecution that presents a powerful conundrum of emotional response and today's need for personal censorship.
